books for great grammy, 2010

In December 2008, my great grandmother passed away in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was not able to grieve with my family or say goodbye to her because I was in Phoenix, Arizona. To deal with her death, my disconnection and the fact that my father moved into her house five months later, I carry out the women's work that was passed down to me. This allows me to connect with her and in some ways communicate with her. These photographs were made during my first visit home after her death and during the time my father moved into her house. Both books are made out of materials she used to make herself clothing.
As I sew and quilt, I can hear her teach me each step and when I am stuck, I ask her for help.
